A bent sill on the first proper track is an expensive way to learn that side protection matters. If you’re looking up how to fit rock sliders, chances are you’ve already worked out that side steps and real sliders are not the same thing. One is there to help you climb in. The other is there to take the weight of the vehicle when the line goes wrong.
Rock sliders are hard-use protection. Done right, they shield the sill, support the vehicle over rocks, ruts and washouts, and give you a stronger jacking point on many setups. Done badly, they rattle, foul on doors, sit crooked, or worse, tear at weak mounting points. That’s why fitment matters just as much as the slider itself.
Before you fit rock sliders, check what you actually bought
Not every slider mounts the same way, and that’s where plenty of installs come unstuck. Some are chassis-mounted. Some use body mounts. Some bolt to factory holes, while others require drilling. A few designs tuck in tight for clearance, while others kick out slightly at the rear to help deflect the body away from rocks and trees.
Before a single bolt comes out of the box, confirm the slider is made for your exact vehicle, year and variant. That means checking wheelbase, cab configuration, trim differences and whether there are factory side steps, brush bars, mudflaps or underbody accessories in the way. On some utes and wagons, diesel and petrol variants can even affect brackets and clearance around lines or shields.
Now is also the time to read the manufacturer’s instructions from start to finish. No guessing. Premium vehicle-specific gear is engineered around proper fitment. If the instructions call for spacers in a certain position or a bolt sequence in a certain order, there’s a reason.
Tools and setup matter more than people think
You don’t need a full workshop to fit sliders, but you do need the basics covered. A socket set, spanners, torque wrench, trim tools, a breaker bar and a decent jack help. So does a second set of hands. Most sliders are awkward, heavy and lined up close to paintwork. Trying to bench-press one into place on your own is how you chip a sill or cross-thread a bolt.
Park the vehicle on flat ground and make sure it’s stable. If you need more room underneath, use safe lifting points and axle stands. Never rely on a jack alone. If factory steps are fitted, remove them first and keep an eye on any clips, sensors or trim pieces tied into them.
Lay all hardware out before you begin. Match bolts, washers, crush tubes, spacers and brackets against the instructions. If anything looks wrong, stop there. Forcing the wrong hardware into a chassis rail is a quick path to stripped threads and wasted time.
How to fit rock sliders without making a mess of the bodywork
The smartest way to approach the job is to loosely mount everything first. Don’t fully tighten one end and hope the rest follows. Offer the slider up into position, support it with a jack or a mate, then start all bolts by hand. If the system uses separate chassis brackets, loosely fit the brackets first, then attach the slider.
Hand-threading the bolts is critical. If they don’t start cleanly, something is misaligned. Back off and check bracket orientation, spacer placement or whether factory thread holes need cleaning. Dirt, coating overspray and road grime in captive nuts can make a good install feel impossible. Running a thread chaser through factory holes can save a lot of swearing.
Once the slider is hanging in place, step back and check the visual alignment before tightening anything. Look at the gap to the body along the full length. Check the clearance to the front and rear guards. Open and close all doors. On some vehicles, especially where sliders tuck in close under the sill, a few millimetres can be the difference between a clean fit and door edge contact when the body flexes off-road.
Clearance is not just about looks
A slider that sits tight and high usually gives you better clearance off-road, but it still needs room to move with the vehicle. Body-on-frame 4WDs twist. Bushes compress. Loads shift. If the slider is jammed hard against the body, that contact will show up once the rig is articulated on a track.
You also need to check around brake lines, wiring, fuel lines and factory underbody shields. Some bracket systems pass close to these areas, and it’s your job during install to make sure nothing is pinched, rubbing or loaded up against a hard edge. If a line is near a bracket, follow the manufacturer’s guidance and ensure it sits safely once the bolts are torqued.
Rear kick-out sliders deserve an extra look as well. They’re designed to push the vehicle away from obstacles, but they can also change how the slider lines up with mudflaps and rear tyre clearance. On some setups, minor trimming may be required. That’s not unusual, but it should be deliberate and neat, not a rough guess with a grinder after everything is already tight.
Tighten in stages, then torque properly
Once the slider is positioned correctly, tighten the hardware in stages. Start with the main mounting points, then work through the remaining bolts evenly so the brackets pull up square. This helps prevent one side binding while the other side is still floating.
The final step is torque. Not “tight enough”. Not “that feels right”. Use the manufacturer’s torque specs and a proper torque wrench. Sliders deal with impact loads, vibration and constant exposure to water, dust and corrugations. Under-torqued bolts can loosen. Over-torqued bolts can stretch hardware or damage threads in the chassis.
If the instructions call for thread locker, use it. If they specify re-torquing after the first drive or after a few hundred kilometres, do that too. Fresh installs settle. Powder coat compresses at mating surfaces. Hardware beds in. A quick recheck is cheap insurance.
Drilling, crush tubes and other fitment realities
Some rock sliders are true bolt-on kits. Others need drilling through the chassis or mounting through sections where crush tubes are supplied. That’s not a deal-breaker, but it raises the stakes. If drilling is required, measure twice, mark accurately and protect anything behind the drilling area. You do not want to discover a line or loom the hard way.
Where crush tubes are used, install them exactly as directed. They’re there to prevent the chassis section from deforming when bolts are tightened. Leave them out or fit them incorrectly and you can compromise the strength of the whole mounting point.
Likewise, if your slider system includes backing plates, reinforcement plates or specific washer orientation, don’t improvise. Good slider design spreads load for a reason. A high-quality slider can only perform to its design if the install matches the engineering.
What to check after the install
Once both sides are fitted and torqued, go back over the whole job with a hard eye. Check every fastener. Confirm all doors open cleanly. Make sure any removed trim, guards or mudflaps are properly refitted. If the slider doubles as a step, stand on it and feel for movement. A solid set should feel planted, not vague.
Take the vehicle for a short drive, then inspect again. Listen for knocks or rattles. Recheck bolt torque after that first run and again after your first proper trip away. Corrugations and chassis flex expose a rushed install quickly.
It’s also worth understanding what your sliders are and aren’t designed to do. Most premium sliders will handle hard side contact and support substantial load, but not every product is rated the same for jacking or pivoting the vehicle. If you plan to use them with a hi-lift style jack or as part of a recovery or extraction scenario, confirm that with the product specs first.
When it makes sense to use a workshop
If your sliders need drilling, trimming, relocation of lines, or the vehicle already has bar work and protection gear competing for the same space, there’s no shame in handing the job to a capable workshop. Same goes if the vehicle is new, high-value or still under finance and you don’t want the risk of damaging paint or underbody coatings.
A proper install is part of the product. Serious 4WD gear is not the place to cut corners for the sake of saving an hour.
