How to Choose
5 Steps to the Right Shackle.
1
Check Your Vehicle's GVWR
Find the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating on your driver's side door jamb or owner's manual — it's the maximum loaded weight of your vehicle. If you've modified your rig (lift kit, heavy axles, rooftop tent, topper) factor that extra weight in on top of the manufacturer figure.
2
Choose a Shackle with Adequate Working Load Limit (WLL)
Your shackle's WLL should be at least 1.5–2× your vehicle's GVWR for safe recovery operations. Don't underspec — a shackle failure during a recovery is a serious safety risk.
3
Measure Your Recovery Point Hole Diameter
Use calipers to measure the inside diameter of the hole on your bumper or recovery point. If you only have a tape measure, lay it across the hole and account for any coating or paint that may reduce the effective inside diameter.
4
Select the Right Pin Diameter
The shackle pin should fit snugly without excessive play. Common shackle sizes are ½, ⅝, ¾ and ⅞ inch — pin diameters run ⅛ inch larger than the stated size. If your hole is a touch loose, check out our Rattle Rings, Nylon Washers and Shackle Adapter Sleeves in the Recovery Parts section.
5
Factor in Safety and Material Quality
Always choose forged chromoly or carbon steel shackles — avoid aluminium shackles, which are ornamental only. All MKO shackles carry a 5:1 Factor of Safety, meaning the Minimum Breaking Strength is 5× the Working Load Limit.
